When there are warnings of not being able to detect the webcam, or you experience a 'Spinning Wheel' icon (but no webcam image) we recommend students follow these steps:

1. Please exit the pre-exam webcam check, and click the 'i' icon in the LockDown Browser toolbar. For Mac users, this will be a Globe icon. On the window that appears, click the button titled 'check for new version.' For Mac, this will read 'check for update.' If a new version is detected, install it to your computer, then try to take your exam again after the install is finished. A helpful article is here.

2. If the problem persists after doing step #1 above, please restart your computer. Once restarted, close down all applications that might use a video camera or webcam.

If a camera driver was recently updated on your computer and your webcam has since stopped working with LockDown Browser, consider 'rolling back' to the previous version of that driver. 3. Close down any utilities running in the background such as Dropbox, Skype, Instant Messaging clients, Facebook, BitTorrent, Spotify, and MegaBackup. Such utilities could be preventing your webcam from working correctly with LockDown Browser.

4. Open LockDown Browser, log in, and navigate to a course. Afterwards, click on the 'Help Center' icon in the toolbar.

5. Run the system check and ensure your camera is detected.

6. Run the webcam check and ensure your camera's image is shown. If necessary, you can change the camera during the webcam check via the 'change my webcam' link. Be sure to actually select the physical internal or external camera. Never select anything labeled 'splitter' or 'filter.' Please refer to this article.

If the image is detected during the Help Center webcam check, it should also be detected during the pre-exam webcam check.

7. Sometimes, anti-virus software can interfere with the camera working properly. Temporarily disabling the AV software may help to determine if it's playing a role. Be sure to re-enable your AV software after you finish performing this troubleshooting step.

Important Note:

We strongly recommend using an Ethernet (wired) Internet connection while taking your exam in Lockdown Browser. If you lose your Internet connection during the exam, it will lock up the browser and not allow you to save answers, move on to other questions, submit or exit the exam.

Installing Respondus Lockdown Browser

To install Respondus Lockdown Browser on your system:

  1. Download UALR's installer for Respondus Lockdown Browser.
  2. Then you'll need to select the operating system on which Respondus Lockdown Browser will be installed:
    • If you are using a computer that uses Windows, click the Windows icon.
    • If you are using a Macintosh computer, click the Mac icon
  3. Then select the option that best fits your situation:
    • Lab Computer — If you are using a lab computer on a UALR campus, please contact the Lab Administrator to assist you with this installation.
    • Your Own Computer — Select this option if you are installing this software on your own computer or one that you are borrowing from family or friends.
    • Work Computer — If you are using a computer at work, you MAY need to contact the system administrator for assistance.
Important Note:

In order to install Respondus Lockdown Browser, you will need to have administrative privileges. Also be aware that if you are installing this software on a work related machine, there may be software that is pre-installed on the system that may interfere with Respondus Lockdown Browser. If you begin having problems when using a work related machine, try using a non-work computer and see if you continue to have problems.

  1. Read over the information provided for your selection and click the Download Installer link.
  2. When the File Download Installer dialog box opens, select Run to open the Respondus Lockdown Browser Installer.
  3. Click the Install button to install Lockdown browser to your computer.

Updating Respondus Lockdown Browser

To update to the latest version of Lockdown Browser, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Respondus LockDown Browser application.
  2. Select 'i' from the toolbar (Windows) or 'About' (Mac).
  3. Select Check for Newer Version.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and run the patch.

If the 'Check for Newer Version' doesn't recognize the latest version, it's because you are running a relatively old copy of LockDown Browser. The solution is to do a full re-installation, please see steps above for Installing Respondus Lockdown Browser.

After patching or re-installing the application, the 'i' or 'About' button on the toolbar should show the latest version number.

Taking an Exam in Respondus Lockdown Browser

To take an exam in the Lockdown Browser, follow the steps below:

  1. Close all open programs or applications.
  2. Open Lockdown browser by clicking the icon on your computer.
Important Note:

You may be prompted to close any programs or windows that are still open. Select the option to close these programs from the prompts that appear. Sometimes Lockdown browser will be unable to close an application. You will need to manually close these applications before you can proceed. Download os x for 2009 macbook pro.

  1. Login to Blackboard normally
  2. Go to the course which has the exam you want to take.
  3. Take the test and submit it as you would normally.
  4. Log-out and close Lockdown browser.
